Territorial Acknowledgement:

We humbly acknowledge that we gather on the traditional territories of Indigenous and Inuit Peoples across Turtle Island, who have nurtured and protected these lands since time immemorial. We recognize the profound injustices endured by Indigenous and Inuit communities through forced removal from their families and ancestral lands, and we honour their resilience and strength.

As individuals and organizations, we acknowledge the urgent need to address and dismantle systemic racism experienced by both Indigenous and Inuit Nations and People of African descent. We stand in solidarity with Indigenous and Inuit Peoples in their quest for justice and sovereignty. Here are examples of actions we can take together:

Education and Awareness:

We commit to educating ourselves and others about the histories and cultures of Indigenous and Inuit Peoples, as well as the experiences of People of African descent. Through storytelling and sharing of narratives, we aim to cultivate understanding, empathy, and solidarity.

Centering Indigenous Voices:

We will actively prioritize Indigenous and Inuit voices in decision-making processes, honouring their traditional knowledge and wisdom. By amplifying Indigenous and People of African Descent perspectives, we can work towards more equitable and inclusive solutions.

Advocacy and Support:

We will advocate for the full implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the United Nations Declaration on the Decade of African Peoples, recognizing the vital importance of self-determination and cultural preservation. We will actively support Indigenous-led initiatives and campaigns aimed at achieving justice, sovereignty, and cultural revitalization.

Cultural Exchange and Collaboration:

We acknowledge the shared tradition of storytelling as a means of preserving culture and identity for both Indigenous and People of African descent. We will actively seek opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration, celebrating the richness and diversity of our collective stories.

Reconciliation and Healing:

We commit to actively engaging in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and the Calls for Justice from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Final Report. This includes supporting initiatives aimed at addressing the enduring legacy of colonialism, fostering healing, and preventing further harm.
